There are many reasons why supplements can be very beneficial for your health and as an assisting factor when trying to reach a specific fitness goal. Now, it’s important to remember that supplements are not supposed to replace a healthy diet- nor do they work like a magic pill where you don’t need to put in the hard work to reach your goal.
Here are a few reasons why taking supplements is a beneficial component to add to your healthy routine.
REASON # 1: NUTRIENTS ARE DEPLETED IN OUR SOIL
Since the industrial revolution, our soil has been heavily depleted in essential nutrients. Modern farming techniques utilize fertilizers that lead to nutrient depletion. Plants grow in these nutrient derived areas and with lack of minerals they cannot form essential vitamins which we would normally take up from plants. So, we are now getting fewer nutrients from the foods we eat than what we used to- hence supplementing can be very important to fill the gaps where our diet leaves off.
REASON # 2: COMMERCIAL PROCESSES DECREASE NUTRIENT CONTENT IN FOODS
Not only are nutrients depleted in the plants when they grow in depleted soils; modern harvesting, food processing, shipping procedures, food storage and the addition of unnatural derivatives to our foods in these processes degrade nutrients that are available. So you gain fewer nutrients from our foods than you would if you would consume it as soon as its harvested.
REASON # 3: SYNTHETIC ADDITIVES & POLLUTION LEAD TO THE NEED OF MORE NUTRIENTS IN OUR BODIES TO MANAGE DAMAGING COMPOUNDS THAT ENTER OUR SYSTEM
Adding synthetic substances into our foods in modern procedures for food storage, preserving food, shipping, food processing etc. increase our bodies need for more nutrients to deal with these damaging compounds that enter our bodies with the food we eat. So, not only does our modern diet lack of nutrients- it also leave our bodies needing more nutrients than before. We are also under more stress due to pollution of the environment including air pollution like carbon monoxide, lead and mercury, land pollution like degraded plastic and pollution of water.
REASON # 4: KEEP HEALTHY THROUGH DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE
It is important for growing children to obtain the vitamins and minerals they need to support healthy growth and therefor a supplement is very beneficial. Taking a multivitamin is also important later in life as our bodies ability to absorb nutrients decrease with age, and many medications interfere with absorption. We could just eat more food, but the amounts needed of today’s nutrient deficient foods would interrupt a caloric balance.
REASON # 5: EXERCISE INCREASES NUTRIENT NEEDS
